MX Linux is a midweight Linux operating system based on Debian stable and using core antiX components, with additional software created or packaged by the MX community. The community's stated goal is to "combine an elegant and efficient desktop with simple configuration, high stability, solid performance and medium-sized footprint".
It received its own DistroWatch page as a separate distribution with the release of the first Public Beta of MX on November 2, The MX versions were intended to fit onto a CD, a constraint that limited the applications that could be included. This series saw the gradual evolution of the MX Tools, a collection of handy utilities designed to help the user with a variety of common tasks that are often complicated and obscure.
MX moved to the new Debian Stable "Jessie" using systemd-shim, meaning that systemd is installed but the default init is sysvinit. Substantial expansion of MX Tools occurred. MX was still based on Debian Stable "Jessie" but with many applications backported and added as well from other sources.
MX continued the development of MX Tools, introduced a new kernel, enabled whole disk encryption, and added grub themes and splash functionality through MX Boot options.
New artwork and improved localization were also included. MX upgraded its base to Debian 10 Buster and its default desktop to Xfce 4. It is characterized by new and revised Tools, artwork, documentation, localization and technical features.
MX includes a suite of user-oriented tools called MX Tools. Many of these tools were developed specifically for MX, while some were forked from existing antiX applications or are existing antiX applications; a couple were imported with permission from outside sources.

The "cloned" image is bootable from disk or USB-thumbdrive while maintaining all settings. This way an installation can be migrated or distributed to a new hard-disk or USB-thumbdrive with minimal administrative effort, since an advanced method of copying the file system developed by antiX-Linux uses bind-mounts performing the "heavy lifting".
The snapshot also serves as a complete backup of the installation. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. MX Linux MX "patito feo". Retrieved Linux distributions.

Debian Stable simply does not. Breakage in Debian Stable is very rare. It also means access to the huge, vast, far-flung Debian repositories of free and open-source software. The largest on Earth. No beta stuff, not cutting-edge, the latest and greatest, but definitely more reliable. A lot of software depends on systemd now, so installing just about anything from the Gnome project and other software means you have to have systemd as a dependency.Story of seasons mod
For most users — including me, actually — this is not any big deal. But in the back of my mind I wonder what systemd may become as it takes over more and more functions in Linux in the future. No more adding PPAs just to get this or that bit of software. AntiX has no systemd at all, by the way! Debian-base, systemd-free.
It may not be the same on a Debian base, but since Ubuntu is built from Debian I have little reason to think LXDE would be any less buggy on a Debian base than it is — on my computer at least — on even a minimal Ubuntu base. Xfce is wonderful, simple, and infinitely configurable. All I wanted to do was copy a URL from an e-mail into a post to a forum. No big deal, right?
And I wait. And wait. The little round cursor thing spins away, then disappears. No Icedove. I have to quit Iceweasel just to get Icedove to open. The same thing happens when I click on a link in Icedove and waaaaaiiiiiiiiit for Iceweasel to open. Still waiting. But in Synaptic I can enable other repositories that offer it. Why Seamonkey?
It uses the same add-ons that I use on Firefox. Win, win. Why not Clawsmailthe ultralight default e-mail client in MX? Old hardware, yeah, but perfectly good if I can solve this problem.
The interface is familiar to users of previous versions of Thunderbird and Firefox, too. Built from the wonderful old Netscape Internet Suite by the folks at Mozilla, Seamonkey has — for the time being at least — staved off the absolute necessity of adding RAM to this old relic hardware. And sure enough, like almost every Tuesday since I installed Xubu Privacy Terms. Search Advanced search. Quick links. The perfect confusion produced by the makers! Quite a feat.
No clarity whatsoever, and vagueness abound. Exactly what the world needs. Re: please add even more confusion about Antix vs. It is a midweight OS designed to combine an elegant and efficient desktop with simple configuration, high stability, solid performance and medium-sized footprint. So don't throw away that old computer yet! The goal of antiX is to provide a light, but fully functional and flexible free operating system for both newcomers and experienced users of Linux.
It should run on most computers, ranging from MB old PIII systems with pre-configured swap to the latest powerful boxes. The installer needs minimum 2. Then what are the differences, and is there any reason at all which would that be? Production : 4. But now I am totally confused as to whether 1. Some name confusion going on from where I come from.
Why point out a similarity rather than the differentiating properties? Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it. Antix uses straight window managers and is designed for lower end hardware. Perhaps any of my videos on the subject would provide enlightenment.

It is true that the latest release, be it either MX or antiX, has the latest versions of our software. Now MX will mostly catch up. Version: -- I'm impressed by how much this version has improved in user-friendliness over It just broke through the threshold of not being just for "experienced users TM ". And I can't really put my finger on what it was that did it.
The theming is much more vibrant, but that by itself shouldn't mean much. Every release, MX and antiX leapfrog each other in terms of features, then they implement each others' new changes, so this time antiX has integrated all of the new MX Tools, which are excellent.
Some tweaks were also make to the live-system to make it more intuitive to set up. And don't be fooled by it being designed for the staunch purist in mind: it has the latest cutting-edge software in its repos, and its kernels are very well maintained. In fact, I think that this is the ideal distro to run VirtualBox off of, bar none. And of course, this thing is noticeably quicker than any distro you've ever tried as usual.
Was this review helpful? Yes No. Version: Great distro! It uses very little HW resources the OS itself only consumes 18MB of RAM when booting is finished and the system is upit is highly customizable and it supports old HW with no issues no need to go after drivers or other headaches. I use it in a year old bit Pentium PC with 1. Firefox runs a litlle slow due to low processor capacity of the PC, mostly when using it on Youtube videos with high resolution, but other than that I can do everything I need to do in a home PC, including web browsing, MS Office files, photo, audio and video editing and visualization, file downloading including torrentemails, etc.
Worth mentioning that it comes with Conky pre-configured and running and Conky is awesome! I was also able to easily configure and run iptables with my preferred firewall config on startup, something I could not manage to do with Linux Mint for example systemd suck, btw.
I tried also MX Linux, Crunchbangpluplus and a few other distros that supported bit processor at the time but all of them required more HW resources and overall I found AntiX to be simply better.Just enough to get you connected wired and ready to build. Use F4 at the live boot menu and choose wicd to turn it on.
If you want Debian without systemd, give antiX a try. It works great on old boxes and the latest and greatest. Will this be fixed? I love this project. Antix MX, too for me is a shining beacon in the sea of meh.
Thank you! Congratulations on the new release. As always, I fully expect this distribution to install cleanly, and even if there are defects in any of the software some of which we inherit from the sourceI think you will find that this collection is smartly conceived, well engineered, thoughtfully put together, and depending what specific utilities, tools, and applications you choose to run, it can be quite nimble and fast.
Oh happy day! I wish I could put this on my Chromebook being that my desktop died. I read up on this distro and it appears to be very good.
Maybe I can get another regular computer to put this on.

The choice is yours! The most extensive live usb on the planet! So what is included? Many thanks to all who worked, tested, promoted and helped antiX. How great to see this exciting announcement on the new shiny website!

When prompted for password, enter demo. Root password not sudo is root.Back inthe antiX devs foresaw that usb flash drives would be the wave of the future for live Linux media.
During the ensuing eight years antiX has been refining their live-usb technology striving to improve the live-usb experience and to find new and unique ways for making use of fast read-write live boot media. During this same time usb flash drives have got larger, more reliable, much cheaper, and much much faster.Update your antix live system kernel! (antiX & MX)
Like many other distros, our legacy bootloader provides convenient popup menus for easy customization. But, unlike the others, on the live-usb we also offer an "F8 Save" feature that saves your choices across reboots. This has got to be just about the easiest way possible to customize a live-usb. It is a trivial way to customize the language, timezone, and many other things.
F8 Save menu A custom main menu entry gets created and the value for each popup menu is saved. There are no popup menus in the UEFI bootloaders yetbut we do offer a series of text menus that provide the same level of customizations and these choices can also be saved across reboots of the live-usb.
The live-usb-maker Tool Not all live-usbs are created equal. Our iso files support the creation of live-usbs with the "dd" command, which is often easy and convenient. However, a "dd" live-usb copies the read-only iso file system from the iso file so few of our special live-usb features will work since those features try to take advantage of read-write capabilities of usb flash drives.
We encourage you to use the live-usb-maker tool available for both gui and command line to make antiX and MX live-usbs. This will ensure you get a full featured live-usb. If you have already made a "dd" live-usb or were forced to boot with a live-cd or a live-dvd, don't worry! The live-usb-maker tool offers "clone mode" which will copy your currently running antiX or MX live system to a new usb stick without a copy of the iso file. Both the command line and gui versions of live-usb-maker allow you to make an encrypted live-usb.
The command line version offers even more options and customization. Live Persistence Live persistence lets you save changes to the root file system and changes to the home file system across reboots. When you select persistence usually from the "F5 Persist" menuthe persistence files will get set up for you automatically the first time persistence is enabled.
Dynamic root persistence saves file system changes in RAM and then copies them to the "rootfs" file whenever the persist-save program is run it can be configured to always run at system shutdown. Static root persistence saves file system changes directly in the "rootfs" file.
This means persist-save doesn't need to run and no extra RAM is used.
